My initial curiosity in the functioning of the brain was piqued when I was studying psychology. I began to see how, in the ultimate sense, we are all products of our experiences and surroundings, in addition to the many obstacles we encounter. My desire to work in talking therapy has only grown as a result of my more recent training in the effects of trauma, mental health, and neurodevelopmental problems on how we think and feel. I believe that sometimes being heard and understood is the best kind of healing, or at least where healing can begin.
I personally had to undergo long-term therapy as part of my counselling training. I gained a new perspective on how to advance my knowledge and abilities while also discovering more about my true self as a result. I came to see how many of us struggle to live up to the expectations of others, which results in some degree of incongruence. Through therapy, I was able to see myself from a different angle and develop a much stronger sense of self-awareness, all without feeling guilty or ashamed. I hope to be able to help others experience the positive changes that therapy has brought about in my own life.
My Approach
The person-centred approach to therapy was developed by Carl Rogers. He believed that every person, given the right conditions, has the capability to reach their full potential and become their true self. The humanistic approach aimed to offer core conditions of empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence to help the process of self-healing and personal growth. Rogers’ understood that certain life experiences can cause our thinking to become distorted, affecting us emotionally, which can affect our day to day life.
I work from a person-centred experiential modality, also know as PCET. This incorporates all the values of the PC approach with the extra addition of looking at what is going on in our body. I believe looking holistically at how our body reacts, as well as how we think, is important when discussing our mental wellbeing. PCET focuses on the feelings you have, allowing you to make sense of them. It also helps to better understand the impact those feelings may be having on your life.
